Review of Monsters (2010) by Trevor R — 27 Oct 2014
"Monsters" evokes such a real, lived-in sense of place through its subtle production design (and devastated real-world locations), made more remarkable considering the microscopic budget. The central relationship is a little undercooked and leans heavily on old romance tropes, but it still works, primarily because of the fantastic Scoot McNairy.
Whitney Able-- also talented, but perhaps less refined in her craft-- is also great. The majestic ending sequence shows the kind of strange, beautiful profundity that only science-fiction has the potential to elicit.
A promising debut for director Gareth Edwards.
