Review of Monsters (2010) by Albert A — 19 Jul 2015
Fortunately the creatures in this film can't talk or we'd be subjected to even more asinine dialogue, which was more akin to narration than any conversation anyone has ever had. Aside from this and the stupidity of the two protagonists, the film works.
The pacing and tension are palpable and the effects are mostly good enough to suspend your disbelief and enjoy. Shots of ruined buildings and an entire coastal village are especially poignant and well-shot.
At 90 minutes the finale comes at the right time and is easily the most satisfying moment of the film. Easy symbolism and a surprisingly tender ending might make this trip through an apocalyptic Mexico a bit too lame, but in fact there's plenty to savour along the way.
