Review of Monsters (2010) by Nathan L — 27 Aug 2012
Monsters is a thrilling and adventurous story of two individuals through a suedo post apolocolyptic world due to extraterrestrial creatures. The plot is as simple as it gets, but brings moviegoers deep into a desperate situation and into the minds of those living it.
Monsters leaves much of the story to the imagination of its viewers, and really relies on the characters to crate the story rather than its plot, unlike most scifi movies. The cinematography is stunningly beautiful despite its low budget and definitely one of the highlights of the film.
Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able give decent but not amazing performances and fit their roles well even though they come off emotionless at times. The graphics are decent enough and don't look cheap, and the screenplay allows for enough thrill to keep audiences attentive.
The film is slow at times but never becomes overly boring. I enjoyed the open ended plot design and how it leaves the audience analyzing and questioning ones' life. I have to say that the film had to grow on me a little before I could really appreciate its intended designed.
Overall, although Monsters is not a typical scifi/monster/thriller film, it does present audiences with a beautiful and fantastic story of survival, life and love in desperate times; and I would recommend it to anyone that is seeking a thrilling and adventurous film.
