Beautifully shot, slow to excite--much like Gareth's Godzilla. Except Godzilla did genuinely excite; the same cannot be said for Monsters. However, given the budget and filmmaking process (or lack of process; it should be recommended to learn about this films no-script approach), this low budget "creature" film stands far above the rest, even if it lacks action or titular the monsters. These characters are genuinely pleasant to hang out with for the running-time, no doubt due to the real life couple playing them. The would-be generic creature/alien invasion backdrop is saved by some unique alterations, creating a mythology you actually begin to wish was better showcased. The sequel looks to be abandoning any resemblance to this smarter scenario, so enjoy the trip to the boarder as is.

If you want to follow the career path of newcomer Gareth Edwards, don't miss this clever humble origin. With Godzilla 2 already announced and his upcoming 2016 untitled Star Wars project, Edwards got the dream gig he surely worked hard for. No matter the budget, he's a cut above the rest, as seen here with Monsters. Did I mention how beautiful it looks? This had to be something even Wally Pfister appreciated.
