Review of Monster in a Box (1992) by Alyssa N — 29 Mar 2009
As a writer, I know that it's one thing to be able to write an interesting and entertaining story, and another entirely to be able to recite it in a way that is just as interesting and entertaining.
Luckily, both areas seem to be Spalding Gray's expertise, so even though this film is just him monologuing the whole time, it still held my attention, and I even laughed a couple times. However, since this is a movie and not just a reading, there are definitively more ways he could have taken advantage of this new medium, rather than just subtle differences in lighting, music, or camera angle.
Maybe this is just personal preference, but if I'm watching a movie, I want to feel like I'm watching a movie and not just a one-man stage performance that happened to be filmed.
