Review of Monster House (2006) by Daniel P — 22 Sep 2012
A funny, quite scary film that refreshingly does not patronise it's audience - a film for children that is not childish. Interestingly, Monster House sticks very close to a standard horror template and despite the overly reassuring happy ending, had this been live-action film and not CGI animation it would unlikely be able to get away with a PG certificate.
The film does rather lose steam in the last 30 minutes and the animation of the characters (the house accepted) is peculiar and alien looking, which means that inspite of a strong color scheme there's a nagging sense of detachment.
Nevertheless, some good voice work, a witty (occasionally risqué) script and a sense of fun make this a pretty damn good hour and thirty minutes.
