Review of Monster House (2006) by Theresa W — 21 Jun 2009
MONSTER HOUSE is a spooky, yet transcendently funny and suspenseful haunted house film for children and adults alike. The trick it plays on you is its premise, which is very original. It uses the main device to great invention, throughout the entire movie. From Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg as Executive Producers, director Gil Kenan can direct creative and fast-paced animation and synchronicity with lively voice acting like a pro.
The voice actors included are big names: Kevin James, Nick Cannon, Fred Williard, Steve Buscemi, Jon Hader, Jason Lee, and Maggic Gyleenhaal. Each give their own distinct characterization to their character, whether it's for comedic or dramatic effect.
The film tells a story about a house and its grumpy owner. The grumpy owner takes all the junk that lands on his lawn and warns the kids to go if they don't want to be eaten alive (he may be serious about that). His name is Mr. Nebbercracker, having lived in a particular neighborhood for 45 years. DJ, a 13-year old boy, is on to Mr. Nebbercracker because he feels that he's hiding something. He spies on him using a telescope. When October 30 comes around, his parents leave and his controlling babysitter arrives...but not before they step onto Nebbercracker's lawn and give him a heart attack. Chowder, his best friend, wants DJ to shrug it off, but DJ can't. One day later, the 31st, is a day when all the little kids come out to trick or treat. DJ thinks he's too grown up for it, but Chowder doesn't. What they agree on is that the house is alive, with valid but unbelievable proof. They convince a boarding school girl about the truth, and she decides to help them bring down the house, even without the help of the police.
From here, MONSTER HOUSE synchronizes a strong story with fast-paced, creative animation and lively voice acting to churn out a animated movie that's innovative and freshly entertaining. After all, everyone has known of that certain house in your neighborhood that's spooky. Who can't relate? All in all, MONSTER HOUSE is a spooky, yet transcendently funny and suspenseful haunted house film for children and adults alike.
