Review of Monster House (2006) by Lee D — 20 Feb 2010
Monster house was one of the bigger surprises of that year. the movie was a great mix of juvenile-esque humor, great voice/motion acting, an original concept and twist on the monster movie genre and gorgeous art direction.
The story- monster house takes us into what initially would appear to be the Rockwellesque ideal suburban neighborhood, little girl riding a tricycle, colorful clean houses etc. but one house does not match, and for good reason. the story for this movie is so rich in fantasy, growth of character, humor, and heart that you really can't give much away without ruining it.
The look- monster house has a very original and beautiful look and art direction to it, one of the most unique looking animated films in the past decade, especially with power houses like Pixar and Dreamworks around. the look of the film feels alot like illustrations you'd expect to find in a children's book, and appropriately so. really a beautiful movie to watch.
The content- the humor and acting in monster house is really fitting of the rest of the elements of the film. quirky sometimes juvenile but with a lot of heart and innocence.
So if you like a good story that you and the kids can enjoy, id reccomend monster house, it does have a small touch of macabre, but it won't leave your kids in tears of fright. really a worth while film.
