Review of Monster House (2006) by Thomas H — 08 May 2013
Even though Domus Mactibilis has been in the books for quite some time, it can be considered a creative and unique monster in terms of cinema because it's never been used up to this point. It's a shame that (to the best of my knowledge) the first film to use this monster had to be disappointingly average.
So, let me get this straight. The house is smart enough to hide from the authorities when DJ is stomping on the lawn, but it's not smart enough to tell the difference between a kid going trick-or-treating and a dummy made out of a vacuum, a broom, an old college jacket, and a mask of the Creature from Black Lagoon?
I also didn't like the animation in the film. It's supposed to be CG motion-capture animation, but at times, it looks like a crappy "claymation" film. Also, this might just be on the fullscreen version of the film, but the cinematography is really awkward.
However, apart from all that, I was entertained. I found the film to be adequately thrilling with stylish sets, music that really set the mood, and a fair share of funny moments. My favorite part is when Judy is trying to sell candy to Zee. Because of that part, I consider Judy to be the funniest character in the film. And, as I mentioned earlier, the fact that they use a monster that we almost never see these days, if at all, makes the film unique.
Let's leave it at a 6.5/10.
