Review of Monsoon Wedding (2001) by Brian V — 26 Oct 2007
This is a well-deserved Golden Lion winner and box office hit. The main reason Monsoon Wedding was a success was that Mira Nair recognized and took advantage of the strengths of Sabrina Dhawan's script and didn't try to add in the typical bells and whistles.
If this movie was strictly Bollywood, then it would have devolved into a melodramatic dance fest. After seeing the miserable Big Fat Greek Wedding, I thought any more movies featuring the weddings of different cultures were DOA, but this totally redeemed the genre.
