Review of Monsoon Wedding (2001) by Shannon N — 03 Apr 2010
I saw this for a cross cultural studies class; all in all, not bad, although it is true that the topic of infidelity has unfortunately and grossly become a cliche in the entertainment world, and one cannot support a story solely off of this.
Monsoon Wedding takes care of this dilemma by augmenting the simple plot of the arranged marriage bride still starry-eyed from her previous fling with a series of side stories, from a bitter relative toward her uncle, to a lovelorn wedding planner with an insatiable appetite for flowers and the withdrawn woman he meets at the wedding.
This is also a good sample of Indian culture (at least, as far as an midwestern American can tell), making us envious of such jovial celebrations rarely seen in traditional U.S. weddings.
