Review of Monsieur Verdoux (1947) by Paige M — 14 Mar 2009
Charlie Chaplin's performance as a smarmy, charming "bluebeard" saves this black comedy set in 1930s France. About 25 minutes before the movie ends, the tone jarringly shifts as the filmmakers make clear why they chose that setting.
This ending feels very clumsy as the film up to then gave no indication that its murderous anti-hero had any political sensibilities at all. But still I had a great time with the performances in this film.
