Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Bernd P — 01 Jun 2012
Very moving film about an Algerian asylum seeker who gets to teach a school class which has been traumatised by the suicide of their teacher. Himself traumatised by his recent past he transforms his own grief into helping the individual school children to cope with their disturbed feelings.
It could have been a really dark art-housy film with long lingering shallow depth of field shots but the film has a dense plotline which covers quite a lot of ground effortlessly.
