Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Lisa R — 15 Jun 2012
A film about dealing with grief sounds like heavy going, but is handled in such a way that it entertains and comforts. A quiet, moving exploration of how a class of 11 & 12 year olds deal with the death of their teacher and engage with the new teacher that has his own grief to work through. It could have fallen into cliche and over ground that has been travelled many times before in teacher/student films, but it didn't. It felt quite unique.
The performances from all are very good, especially the two lead children, Fellag as Monsieur Lazhar and the actress playing the school principal.
A subtle and touching film, that affected me quite deeply.
