Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Kees V — 30 Dec 2012
Nice film, but based on an implausible story. An Algerian immigrant would never be able to land a job as a teacher at a secondary school in Quebec, let alone as a French language teacher. Algerians speak Arabic.
French is a lingua franca in Algeria (due to its colonial past), but Algerians speak it with a distinct accent. The creators were aware of this flaw and tried to solve it. "No one wants to work here", the principal says.
Enters an Algerian national. It didn't convince me.
