Review of Monsieur Ibrahim (2003) by V H — 07 Mar 2004
Stars: Omar Sharif.
A very sweet film about the relationship between a poor 13 year old Jewish boy and an old Muslim shopkeeper (Omar Sharif) who befriends him in 1960's Paris. With no mother and a disinterested father, the boy, Moses, is left largely to fend for himself, doing the household shopping, the laundry, the cooking...even buying his own birthday cake when his father forgets. Both main characters are extremely likable and the father-son bond they form is developed very convincingly. Poignant without being mushy.
