Review of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953) by Geonard Y — 07 May 2007
Directed by Jacques Tati.
Starring Jacques Tati, Nathalie Pascaud, Micheline Rolla, Valentine Camax, Louis Perrault, Andr? Dubois.
Hulot is undeniably the inspiration for Rowan AtkinsonÕs Mr. Bean. HeÕs a cross between Bean and Forrest Gump in John LithgowÕs body. Jacques Tati starred and directed this unforgettable, iconic, truly funny French movie as Hulot, the innocent, polite and shy gentleman that he is vacations in a small seaside resortÑa familiar territory if youÕre familiar with BeanÕs exploits. ItÕs not really slapstick. ItÕs these little funny accidents that happen during ordinary hours, mildly wholesome and humanely humorous. Dialogues arenÕt necessary, Tati makes us observers of human folly with a tall, bumbling man as centerpiece. Perfect in its execution and a once in a lifetime movie.
Best Scene: Tennis anyone?
QUOTE: ÒThatÕs not tennis!Ó.
