Review of Monsieur Hire (1989) by L.a. K — 06 Apr 2012
Another "quietly devastating" film!! The director does so much without dialogue - visuals and the soundtrack say it all, and Michel Blanc is perfect in the title role! This would not have been made in the U.
S. - American audiences would have a lot to say about the voyeurism that goes way beyond "Rear Window" - but the director's way of making us sympathetic is fascinating. Like so many French films, not a great take-away message about women -- they like men watching them without their permission, and they will always betray you in the end.
For that, I give it 4 stars instead of 4.5. :).
