Review of Monkeybone (2001) by Burt M — 08 Jun 2008
Amongst friends I have bemoaned that there seems to be an ongoing creative dry spell within Hollywood, a town fixated on the comic book blockbuster or the oscar lock. It's rare to find a movie actually willing to entertain it's audience within its own realm in an exciting, creative, wholly inventive way. This is that movie.
I found myself really diggin' this movie, and found myself belly laughing at quite a few scenes. Don't get me wrong, the movie is a mess with its halfhearted pacing and logic and its nonsensical adherence to its own rules. But I love a movie that really strives to be fresh and unique, unafraid to stretch beyond its limitations and entertain.
Performances were great, animation was first rate, and the design was exceptional. Highly recommended but be patient with it, takes time to get into it.
