Review of Monkeybone (2001) by Vanessa R — 16 Oct 2004
This is an odd film. I watched because I'd heard it was a cult classic.Slowly but surely I am beginning to realise that just because something is a 'cult classic' it doesn't automatically mean that it is good. A cult film can have a small but highly devoted audience and that audience can be weeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiirrddd, maaaaannnnn... ;) Visually, the film is a dark Burtonesque on acid thing so I loved this part of it. Storywise it could have been a lot shorter and well, cruder..(is this a word? SURELY it is...) It's not amazingly funny but it had me laughing in places. The acting is quite flat but in this film the acting is secondary to the effects. Generally speaking, a bad thing, but the effects are very well done and. Brendan Fraser as the hero is terribly bland (quite possibly the point) but very believable when possessed by an id-created sexually obsessed monkey..Bridget Fonda's chracter is boring but is a believable love interest. Whoopi Goldberg is the suckiest Death ever conceived..
So...I don't really know what to say or how to descibe it.I mean it's right up my alley. So to speak.I should be raving. Meh.
Right. Um. Yes.
