Review of Monique (1970) by Jason M — 31 May 2008
Simply beautiful. Monique is a sumptuous visual treat, with flashes of surrealism punctuating the already photographic cinematography. My main criticism is that this beauty was not fully embraced, too much being compromised in order to service the story.
The silence of Dupontel is incredibly effective, leaving us only with images to interpret. This however is frequently interrupted again in service to plot. It is a shame the director didn't feel free to fully embrace this more aesthetic approach to film.
