Review of Moneyball (2011) by Brett W — 10 Jan 2013
Uplifting drama about a financially-troubled baseball team - the "Oakland A's" - who with the help of their General Manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and economics whiz Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) turn the baseball world on its head by taking the fight to the mega-rich big boys with only a shoestring budget.
Their secret? Using statistics, averages and calculations to put together a cheap team of misfits that nevertheless are capable of doing the job. It's your classic sports underdog story... with maths! Don't let that put you off though, it's a wonderful tale and a joy to watch and you really don't have to know anything about baseball (as I most certainly don't) to enjoy.
In truth you could transplant any ball game over the top and the effect would be much the same. It perhaps doesn't have much in the way of rewatchability and I don't think it needed quite so much focus on Billy Beane's private life but overall it's well worth a watch.
