Review of Moneyball (2011) by Callum H — 20 Sep 2014
Moneyball's brilliance lies in it's screenplay; the two most fundamentally entertaining portions of the movie, the Beane drama and the mathematical explanations and equations which the movie's plot revolves around all relied on the ingenuity and expositional talents of writers Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin; fortunately, the film's reliance on this component pays off.
Award-worthy performances from Pitt, Hill and Hoffman elevate the film furthermore, and Moneyball proves itself as thoroughly engrossing and even, dare I say it, emotional film. Conventional film-making techniques, as well as certain pacing inconsistencies (the baseball games in particular) do serve as relatively large detractors, though fortunately, they don't affect Moneyball's effectiveness too majorly to subtract from an otherwise outstanding film.
