Review of Money Monster (2016) by Mary Claire O — 27 May 2016
I've come to rely on the movies George Clooney produces to be ones that are designed to bring awareness and humanity to important issues. This one did that. And it kept me on the edge of my seat at the same time.
The movie focuses on the crass sensational circus that our media has become and how it has influenced mass consciousness in, especially, America. More importantly, "Monster" also sheds light on the smoke and mirrors of our financial world and economy, starting very smartly, by reminding us through the main character at the very beginning that our money was taken off the gold standard decades ago and that it's just paper with no real value (which is true, not Hollywood fiction).
The story then goes on to explore how people, even people with very limited resources, can be manipulated into risking and gambling their life on this mirage. The markets are the big game where the guys who have learned how to manipulate the game walk away with the spoils.
It's about rampant, scrambling greed and how change is needed. The directing and cast is superb. I highly recommend it.
