Review of Mona Lisa Smile (2003) by Marcus W — 08 Aug 2008
This is a good film mainly thanks to Maggie Gyllenhaal and in particular Kirsten Dunst - who shines here with the strongest performance. My problem is Julia Roberts: here is the Queen of "chick-flicks" telling a younger generation that they should be themselves, follow their dreams, and not conform to established gender roles.
If it had been someone like Kate Winslet or Meryl Streep, it would have worked, but this just feels hypocritical.
