Review of Mona Lisa Smile (2003) by Thomas M — 10 Mar 2011
It'S Dead Poets Society--girl power edition! It's also excruciatingly irritating. Ditto star Julia Roberts as art history professor Katherine, who arrives at Wellesley in 1953. Katherine is itching to help young girls everywhere find their inner fembots.
A who's who of talented young actresses star as Katherine's students, including Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhall and Julia Stiles. All are basically one-note, simply given one emotion and told to just play that. And also stare at Roberts in wide-eyed wonder. What's most depressing is this dreck was helmed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco). Terrible.
