Review of Mon Oncle (1958) by Arin D — 13 Apr 2008
I love this film now that I finally saw it. A tender look at the clash of old France and the new Modernism. The treatment of the characters even when being critiqued is so soft and wryly ironic that you can't but help feeling a smile edge out from the corners of your personality, and of course I just love, love the dachshund (Dacky).
Jacques Tati's eye for detail is fantastic, and his almost mime-like reliance on physical movement and suggestion mean that this is a truly universal work.
