Review of Mon Oncle (1958) by Mike M — 09 Aug 2009
Jacques Tati continues his "M. Hulot" trilogy with this pleasant gem. Sight gags abound, though M. Hulot is actually not in nearly as much of this film as he was in "M. Hulot's Holiday".
The story revolves mostly around a family and their new "modern" home, which reminds me of watching those old "Kitchen of the Future" programs. Many of the technological advances seem questionable at best, and some seem outright stupid.
The film pokes fun at those who worry about "Keeping up with the Joneses", culminating in a VERY humorous dinner party scene. It should be noted that the M. Hulot films are not so much a feature-length narrative as a collection of sketches, sometimes connected very loosely.
But this is a beautiful film and worth the time to watch.
