Review of Mommie Dearest (1981) by Jon V — 05 Aug 2008
Instead of making a movie about Joan Crawford, they made a Joan Crawford movie! Bears more resemblance to Queen Bee or Harriet Craig than to its subject. Sure she was no prizewinner as a mom (though the "twins" never complained), but this exploitive, over-the-top, unintentionally hilarious flick lays down a cinematic monster who's only a few steps down from Mothra or Godzilla! An already sensational book was filmed even more sensationally, but Dunaway is unforgettable, even if she, herself, despises the movie.
