Review of Mom and Dad Save the World (1992) by Steve M — 31 Mar 2007
If one could bring the Platonic Ideal of a Stupid Movie into the physical world, that movie would be "Mom and Dad Save the World.".
When average American suburban couple Dick and Marge (Jones and Garr) are abducted by aliens, they find themselves on Spengo--a world where the smartest person has an IQ rating in single digets. Marge becomes the love-object of Emperor Tod (Lovitz), and it's up to her husband to save her from a raygun wedding while both of them try to save the Earth from certain destruction.
This sci-fi comedy never misses a chance to go for the dumbest joke possible. Although undoubtedly funnier after the second or third beer, the film is worth seeing for Lovitz's peformance as the man who proves that "In the Land of Morons, the Idiot is King" and for Jones' portrayal of an Everyman who winds up in the role of an Edgar Rice Burroughs-esque hero. (It's also worth seeing for the scenes with the deadliest weapon ever devised! I'm sure everyone knows some co-workers or neighbors who would fall victim to it.).
