Review of Molokai: The Story of Father Damien (1999) by Benjamin S — 24 Jan 2014
A very accurate and affecting biopic that raised my ire because the government and Church officials who should have supported Father Damian didn't even give him the donations given just for him and colony residents.
It doesn't seem possible that the secular and sacred authorities could be jealous of the reputation and recognition of a man serving lepers and then dying of it himself, but such is the character of some who call themselves human.
A stellar cast of supporting actors, but the film lacked a hard to define something to make it great. It's good, but not outstanding. Still worth watching.
