Review of Modern Times (1936) by Walter M — 11 Apr 2011
I'm sorry, I know Chaplin is influential and all and I'm sure this was cutting edge stuff at the time, but this wasn't for me. It's not even the fact that the movie was silent that turned me off since I enjoyed Dr Caligari. I hated Chaplin's character. He was so idiotic and it seemed like he may have been mentally challenged.
I don't think a character annoyed me this much since Bill Murray in What About Bob? This movie isn't funny unless you think people getting hit in the head is hilarious. Physical humor can be funny and clever, but this one made little effort to be clever. Some of the satire on technology in the film was actually surprisingly good at times.
