Review of Modern Times (1936) by John A — 13 Aug 2010
Chaplin is most often associated with comedy, but Modern Times, not to mention other of his films, shows that he extended far beyond a simple comedian. He was a true artist. MT beautifully blends comedy, pathos, humanism, and social commentary.
Some of Chaplin's funniest bits come in this film (the eating machine, the roller skates, the singing waiter), but also his most heartfelt (the conclusion with the Gamin). MT stands as one of the great achievements, not only of Chaplin's career, but in all of cinematic history.
