Review of Modern Times (1936) by Brad G — 21 Nov 2010
A brilliant bit of subversive cinema, Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times is undeniably funny even in this era of Hangovers and Hot Tub Time Machines. Obviously, there are the iconic sight gags of the Tramp caught in the cogwheels or the expertly choreographed department store skating rink, but what really sticks with me is The Tramp's psychotic breakdown at the factory, his sly thievery conducted while handcuffed to an unknowing police officer, and his dream of domestic life with its milk spewing cows and fresh fruit from the vine.
And then there's the beautiful Paulette Goddaard, who looks and feels like a contemporary actress. One could easily see her in the latest Julia Roberts role or rerun of Law & Order SVU. Together, they will find love and food, but probably not stable work or that dream home.
