Review of Modern Times (1936) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
This movie is just great. It all starts out with The Tramp (Chaplin) working in a factory, and as everybody knows, he breaks a machine and gets fired. Through his travels, he meets a lonely girl (Goddard) who accompanies him from there on.
Throughout their journey they encounter chaos, laughs, and adventure, until that well- known ending. Charlie Chaplin is just what you can call a legend-- a good director, a good writer, a good film-maker, a good comedian, and a terrific actor.
This was in fact my first Chaplin movie and I cannot believe it took me this long to see one. Modern Times is chalked full of fun things, the over the-top acting you get from silent movies, and the chaos that is entertaining not matter what.
Every scene, every clip is iconic. I felt I had already seen this movie because of the fact that everyone is always talking about it. Paulette Goddard is the perfect right- hand man or sidekick, and fits this movie perfectly.
Though their then-marriage only lasted a few more years, you get a chance to see them again in another classic, The Great Dictator. Anyways, Modern Times is one of the best movies ever made, and it should be at the top of your list.
