Review of Modern Times (1936) by Sean C — 06 Oct 2011
Chaplin's films may not be ones I'd watch over and over again, but it's hard not to appreciate how easily and intelligently he pokes fun at some very big ideas (industrialization, capitalism, poverty, etc.
) without going over-the-top on slapstick like the Marx Brothers. His movies are always genuinely funny, sweet, and flawlessly cut. Also, Paulette Goddard just exudes adorableness.
