Review of Modern Times (1936) by Kerby H — 28 Jun 2013
Sublime, timeless film. Less a story-arc than a series of superb vignettes, but all of them keep sharp focus of the thematic criticism of over-industrialization, big business greed, and the impersonal nature of new technologies.
That makes it sound pretentious, but it's the opposite - feather-light, universally accessible and very, very funny. Some bits are cornier and more dated than others, but all showcase Charlie's outstanding comic timing and extraordinary athleticism.
Hue's favourite was the watching the expressions on the Little Tramp's face as he scoffed cocaine at a prison table, but I can't go past Charlie's cog work on the assembly line. Goddard is just as endearing and charming, giving the film some much-needed naturalism.
