Review of Modern Times (1936) by Eric M — 03 May 2015
A hilarious send-up of technology and the corporate world that's just as fresh and funny today after 75 years, "Modern Times" is one of Charlie Chaplin's very best movies, chock full of brilliant physical gags (love the lunch machine!) and sly, subtle social commentary.
Paulette Goddard is perfect as the Little Tramp's love interest, and Chaplin's rich comedic gifts are on full display. It's a toss-up between this and "City Lights" as my favorite film of his.
I'll give this the edge, though, just because I find it more consistently funny and also due to the presence of Goddard, who is just downright adorable.
