Review of Modern Times (1936) by Ryan Gibbons — 18 Aug 2010
Hysterical. It is more than likely Chaplin's best film. Not only is it unyielding comedy. It has a very clever story. It is sort of eerie because the setting of this film is really not that much different than the setting today.
It's about machine overpowering man which was made evident by the scene where Chaplin actually goes into the machine. It's got some other clever messages that really are not that hard to fin. He made his point.
I guarantee that most of these scenes will make you laugh. The scene with the food machine nearly had me rolling on the floor. Modern times is a lot of fun but it's also got a fantastic story and Chaplin was never better.
