Review of Moana (2016) by Tor M — 01 May 2017
The newest animated blockbuster is spinning on earlier successes. There is a problem, there is a hero, there is sidekicks and there is songs. Many songs.
Moana, a surrealisticly beautiful daughter of Chief Tui is out on a mission. She is at sea somewhere in Polynesia trying to solve a mystery that acient Demigods never completed. They did half the job, but the result is lack of fish and food on the island she lives.
She hooks up (hoho) with Maui, a shapeshifting Demigod with serious moodswings, and their relationship is demanding loads of change and accept to work out. Luckily there is little love involved here, it may have ruined the movie completely.
It looks amazing. Colors and neat effects favour the film. The story is all right and the sound is very cool. I don't know if I like the songs - sure they are on point and catchy, but I'm not here for pop music. There is to many of them anyhow. Guess it's superb for kids, there are some funny moments here, most of them caused by witty punchlines or silly sidekicks. I dig the tattoo-stuff, it's fresh. The ocean-thing is also pretty cool and it looks incredible.
Interesting and well-crafted film that never offer much new, accept from the plot. The excecution and the tricks they use is like most animated films the last 25 years.
6 out of 10 sleeping darts.
