Review of Moana (2016) by Brady L — 20 Feb 2018
Disney has its princesses. They span generations and are from all kinds of cultural backgrounds. We have seen white princesses from multiple cultures, we have an Asian princess, an aboriginal princess, an African-American princess, even a Muslim princess.
Now we can add a Polynesian princess to the mix. Moana is unique in so many ways from the other princess movies. The one that caught my eye was that this one does not have a true love story behind it.
Her affection for the ocean is similar to a love story but it is not what truly drives her. I am not a fan of musicals and this film does have plenty of songs for children to sing along to. However, the songs do not drag the story down nor do they stop the narrative of the scenes.
Hearing Dwayne Johnson singing "You're Welcome" was unique and catchy. Speaking of The Rock, his portrayal of Maui was perfect. His comedic timing and dramatic tone changes worked for this tortured character.
This movie is a remarkable story that needs to be enjoyed by family's for years to come. You will laugh, maybe cry but you will definitely love and cherish this movie about a young woman who dreams of so much more then what she has and her adventure to save and protect her people and the planet.
