Review of Moana (2016) by Random V — 12 Dec 2017
This Disney picture has a lot of detail and it all works together nicely. It's also a first with a Polynesian princess. Classic story elements of nature, gods, and demi-gods are used to deliver the heart of a goddess to its rightful place. Moana herself is spirited and strong, preferring to take to the ocean rather than live her life on an isolated island. Maui the demi-god is wily and is a kind of mentor, wayfarer, and heroic companion who also learns responsibility from the princess. In this story, Moana embarks on an epic heroic quest. Moana leaves, gains sailing knowledge lost to her people, strength of personality, returns to her people, and affects change in everyone else.
The animation is clear and imaginative, in particular the facial expressions, while exaggerated, excellently convey emotion. Production design is solid. And like in classic Disney tradition, the princess has a connection with animals, only for this princess she's stuck with a crazy chicken. Plus who knew Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson could sing?
