Review of Mitt (2014) by Thomas M — 24 Jan 2014
The most interesting thing about this documentary, especially in the years to come, is probably how plainspoken and good-humored everyone is on the campaign trail. The media cycle likes to paint elections as a matter of bitter rivals jockeying for status as mastermind of the world, but that doesn't change the fact that these candidates have to board endless flights and give hundreds of speeches along the way, getting advice and pointers from advisors and family along the way. The off-the-cuff demeanor of the Romney family makes them seem a million times more relatable than any stump speech or photo op.
Having said that, this movie's refreshingly apolitical tone also frustrates at times, especially as the snippets behind the curtain lead us to expect some commentary or distinct correction about what the popular opinion has gotten wrong about the man and his campaign. Yes, he loves his family and enjoys listening to podcasts. Does he also like cookies and milk? This is an interesting piece of political history nonetheless.
