Review of Mitt (2014) by Ted N — 26 Jan 2014
Years ago, I didn't think much of Mitt Romney. Whenever he spoke publicly, he just didn't seem sincere. Then I learned about this story that he survived an auto accident, in which a passenger had died, while in France during a Mormon missionary. This story has always stuck in my head, and I began to see Mitt Romney as a grounded person and less of a politician.
As time went on, Romney went from someone I disliked to someone I really wanted to be elected as the President of the United States.
Mitt, the documentary film, doesn't seem to really capture the human essence of the former Massachusetts governor like his near-death experience story. To me, it almost seemed constrained as if not to reveal too much of his personal side. The movie spans the campaigns of two elections, and the narrative seems to be interrupted abruptly at certain points.
Regardless of your political affiliation, Mitt is still a rare, interesting look into the behind of scenes of political campaigning and insights into the Romney family through both triumphant and difficult times. I believe a more appropriate title for the documentary, however, is "Romney" as I've gained a greater appreciation for the family's involvement in the political process.
