Review of Mistress America (2015) by Hawk _ — 31 Dec 2015
After Frances Ha, my expectations for the next collaboration between Baumbach and Gerwig was sky high, and this movie definitely delivers Although covering a lot of the same themes as Frances, Mistress also has it's own charms.
Frances, for instance was a lighthearted indie drama, however this is much more of a comedy, specifically hearkening back to the screwball era of the 1930s and 40s. Even if that doesn't sound appealing everyone involved here makes it work.
One of the things I actually adore most about the film though is how it seemingly carries on over from Frances despite Gerwig portraying a different character. Gerwig's Brook charms you in the same way Frances did but this new character also has her own quirks and peronality.
It's a great movie and one of my favorites of 2015.
