This is close to the top of the tree relative to its own subgenre ("Southern race hate" films: see also Ghosts of Mississippi, A Time to Kill, The Chamber etc), but compared to mainstream Hollywood it lacks urgency and thrills.
Brad Dourif's performance deserves credit.
