Manipulative and inaccurate? Of course, but why not? 'Mississippi Burning' carries its message well, and Alan Parker really succeeds in getting inside the minds of the small segregated southern community.
The atmosphere is tense throughout (complete with a great 80's score) and the film could easily be viewed as just a compelling crime drama, rather than a film promoting civil-rights. Hackman, Dafoe and McDormand deliver excellent performances, but most noteworthy is Peter Bizou's Oscar winning cinematography.
