Review of Mississippi Burning (1988) by Marty H — 31 Mar 2013
Something about this film felt rushed and inaccurate to me. There is no doubt that Gene Hackman is good at playing Gene Hackman, but the film seemed so forced and unreal to me that I flicked it off before it finished. This is one of many examples of a film that is put together just in time for the Academy Awards to get nominated multiple times. Films shouldn't be nominated or awarded if they are "whats new and talked about right now" or if an actor may be "due up" for an award. Francis McDormand and Hackman were outstanding but it gets me down when my favorite actor Dafoe gets out-shined, looks out of place, or doesn't live up to expectations. Mississippi Burning is another example of a page in our history books being retold in inaccurate, exaggerated Hollywood form.
2/5.
