Review of Mission to Mars (2000) by Elisabeth B — 20 Oct 2011
I watched Mission to Mars for the third time tonight and as I often do after watching a film I really like, I looked it up on Wikipedia only to learn that it received a 24% rating on RT. I was shocked! I think this film is one of the best science fiction films out there, and stands shoulder to shoulder with films like 2001 Space Odyssey, Sunshine, and Inception.
The story is basic enough, first mission goes terribly wrong, 2nd rescue mission discovers what went wrong. What sets this movie into the "intellectual" sci-fi realm is its fantastic human relationships between the scientists and the discoveries with deep human meaning.
I feel it is science fiction at its best and therefore equally shocking that Brian de Palma earned a Worst Director award for this film. All I can gather is that the haters don't understand to sit back and let a film 'happen to them'.
Another beauty of this film is Ennio Morricone's score HELLO.
