Review of Mission: Impossible III (2006) by Steve M — 10 Jun 2012
After the subpar first film and the not-so-good John Woo overdose known as "M:I II," the "Mission: Impossible" franchise finally scores an interesting and exciting entry with the third film, which was the best film in the franchise until the fourth movie came out.
Tom Cruise does what he does best by getting beat up, running and performing near-death defying stunts. After getting an Oscar for his role as Truman Capote, Phillip Seymout Hoffman follows it up with his role as Owen Davian, the best villian of the franchise, as he brings chilling seriousness to the role.
His scenes with Cruise are superb as they tremble in tension and quiet hatred on both characters' parts. The addition of Michelle Monaghan, Maggie Q, Simon Pegg, Billy Crudup and Lawrence Fishburne rounds up a great cast for an action film of this caliber.
Director J.J. Abrams really does deliver with his first film by bringing humor and depth to the characters where the mission become more personal for Ethan than the last two films where he has everything to lose if he fails.
Michael Giacchino's score also perfectly blends action, anxiety, anger and fear.
